Elder Abuse Awareness - Social Security Administration
Yesterday, June 15th, was “Elder Abuse Awareness Day” at the Federal Government, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) highlighted some important information about elder abuse. SSA is, after all, responsible for helping about 70 million people live outside of poverty! In recognizing this important day, SSA issued some very important guidance for seniors collecting Social Security benefits, including a “Never ever” list identifying things that SSA will NEVER do, thus helping SS beneficiaries avoid scams and attempts at fraud. This list includes:
- Never ever will someone from the government say: “Your money isn’t safe. Move it to protect it.” Only a scammer will.
- Never ever will someone from the government threaten to suspend your government benefits if you don’t pay immediately. Only a scammer will.
- Never ever will someone from the government demand that you pay with a payment app, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, or gift cards.
Using this guidance, if anyone contacts you and uses any of these actions, you can be certain it is an att4empt to scam you out of your Social Security money, so, you should just disengage from the contact.
In this Social Security Matters article, the Social Security Administration offers the above guidance, as well as additional guidance for friends or family members to help their senior friends or relatives avoid being scammed or financially abused. And this is not just a one-day journey; it should always be on your mind. Click here for more information.
