A Sad Statistic: 30,000 died awaiting approval of SS Disability benefits - NEXTGOV

Social Security’s customer service issues are quite well known, especially by those who submit an application for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. On average, it’s now taking about 8 months for an initial SSDI determination, and appeals of denied applications can take years to resolve. All the while leaving those with serious disabilities without an important source of income. And for some, a determination by Social Security comes too late – in 2023 about 30,000 people died while their disability application or appeal apparently languished in Social Security’s backlog.

Enter the newly appointed Commissioner of Social Security, Matin O’Malley, who appears committed to improving Social Security’s customer service, as explained in this NEXTGOV.com article by Natalie Alms.
