Signing up for either Social Security or Medicare should not be so confusing. It is easy to fall into certain traps that could cost you thousands of dollars. Why? First, when you sign up for Medicare, you do so on the Social Security website. Second, the question you will encounter says: “Do you wish to apply for Medicare only, but not for monthly retirement benefits?” But if you are not careful, you will have applied for both Medicare and your permanently reduced retirement benefits.
