On August 14, 1935, the Social Security Act established a system of old-age benefits for workers, unemployment insurance, and aid for dependent mothers and children, persons who are blind, and persons with disabilities. Social Security is now a safety net for retirees and the disabled and provides death benefits to taxpayer dependents. But can we replace it?
