How does a previous marriage impact Social Security income?
Full question: I volunteer at a small subsidized elder housing in our rural town. Several women have asked me questions about Social Security benefits when they have been divorced or widowed. Most of our residents are living on very limited incomes. I would like some information so I could try and encourage them to find out if they are entitled to a higher benefit than they what they are now getting. How does a previous marriage impact their annual Social Security income?
Answer: This actual scenario will help to frame the answer to your question. Mrs. Jones was married to her first husband for 10 1/2 years before they were divorced. She married for the second time and was widowed years later. She remarried, eventually retired and began collecting Social Security benefits based on her own work history.
