Will my ex-spouse’s spousal benefit reduce my Social Security benefits? - The Motley Fool

A former spouse married for at least ten years may receive spousal benefits on their ex-spouse’s record if eligible. The positive news for the individual whose record the benefit is based on is that it does not reduce their own Social Security payment or affect their new spouse’s eligibility for a spousal benefit linked to their record.

Certain exceptions permit your ex-spouse to keep receiving their ex-spousal benefit even if they remarry. If they should marry someone eligible for widow’s, mother’s, father’s, childhood disability, divorced spouse’s, or parents’ benefits, their ex-spousal benefit will continue.

You generally don’t need to worry about this as you prepare for retirement, unless you are the ex-spouse seeking the spousal benefits.  Dana George discusses this topic; to read the article, click here …..
