Extra Security for Social Security

The Social Security Administration is adding an extra level of security to user’s online Social Security portal. This month each account will have a 2-step verification process in which a code will be needed alongside a password to log in. This code will be texted to your phone and will be useable for 10 minutes before becoming outdated and a new code will be needed. This was an optional service since the site launched but has recently become mandatory due to an executive order requiring all federal agencies to step up security for online services. Unfortunately this does mean that you will need a cell phone with a text plan in order to continue using the online services.
